Community Safety and Well-Being

The Town of Latchford is committed to creating a safe, healthy, and inclusive community where residents of all ages can thrive. As part of this commitment, the Town has adopted the Timiskaming District Community Safety and Well-Being (CSWB) Plan, a collaborative initiative developed for all municipalities within the Timiskaming District, including the Municipality of Temagami. The plan was created through partnerships between municipalities, community organizations, health and social service providers, emergency services, and residents.

Community safety and well-being is about more than emergency response and policing. It focuses on addressing the underlying social, economic, and environmental factors that influence quality of life, helping ensure that everyone has access to the supports they need to live safely and successfully.

The Timiskaming District CSWB Plan identifies six priority areas that will guide collaborative efforts across the region:

  • Health & Well-Being – Improving access to health care, mental health supports, addictions services, recreation, and opportunities for healthy living.
  • Housing – Increasing the availability of affordable, supportive, and transitional housing while addressing homelessness.
  • Employment & Economy – Supporting workforce development, education, skills training, recruitment, and economic growth.
  • Addressing Poverty – Reducing barriers related to food security, transportation, childcare, and financial stability.
  • Community Safety – Promoting safer communities through initiatives that address road safety, violence prevention, justice services, and community belonging.
  • Environment & Sustainability – Encouraging environmental stewardship and preparing communities to respond to climate change and other environmental challenges.

The success of the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan relies on collaboration between municipalities, community agencies, Indigenous partners, healthcare providers, educational institutions, emergency services, businesses, and residents. By working together, communities across the Timiskaming District can better coordinate services, identify emerging needs, and improve outcomes for everyone.

The Town of Latchford supports the implementation of the Timiskaming District Community Safety and Well-Being Plan and will continue working with regional partners to:

  • Promote healthy and connected communities.
  • Support initiatives that improve quality of life for residents.
  • Encourage collaboration between local organizations and service providers.
  • Advocate for programs and resources that strengthen community resilience.
  • Help create a safe, welcoming, and sustainable community for current and future generations.
