Freedom of Information (MFIPPA)
The Town of Latchford is committed to openness, accountability, and the protection of personal information. The Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA) provides the public with a right of access to municipal records while ensuring that personal information held by the Town is safeguarded.
MFIPPA supports transparent local government by allowing individuals to request information about municipal operations, decisions, and records, subject to limited exemptions under the Act.
Access to Municipal Records
Under MFIPPA, individuals have the right to:
-
Request access to general municipal records
-
Request access to their own personal information held by the Town
-
Request corrections to personal information if it is inaccurate or incomplete
Some records may be exempt from disclosure to protect privacy, security, or other interests identified in the legislation.
Submitting a Freedom of Information Request
A formal Freedom of Information (FOI) request must be submitted in writing and include:
-
Your name and contact information
-
A clear description of the records you are seeking
-
Any relevant dates, departments, or details that will help locate the records
Requests should be submitted to the Municipal Office. A legislated application fee applies, and additional fees may be charged depending on the nature and volume of the records requested.
Processing Your Request
Once a request is received:
-
Acknowledgement — The Town will confirm receipt of your request.
-
Search and Review — Staff will locate and review the requested records.
-
Decision — A decision letter will be issued outlining what information can be released.
-
Access — Records will be provided unless exempt under MFIPPA.
-
Appeal Rights — Applicants may appeal decisions to the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario.
MFIPPA requires that requests be processed within 30 calendar days, unless an extension is permitted under the Act.
Protection of Personal Information
MFIPPA also requires the Town to protect personal information in its custody. This includes:
-
Collecting only information necessary for municipal services
-
Using information only for authorized purposes
-
Safeguarding records against unauthorized access
-
Providing individuals with access to their own personal information upon request
The Town is committed to maintaining strong privacy practices and ensuring responsible handling of all municipal records.
