You are eligible to vote in the Town of Latchford Municipal Election if, on Voting Day, you:

• Are a Canadian citizen;
• Are at least 18 years old;
• Reside in the Town of Latchford;
• Personally own or rent property in the Town of Latchford; or
• Are the spouse of a person who personally owns or rents property in the Town of Latchford; and
• Are not prohibited from voting under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or any other law.

Resident Electors

You are a resident elector if you live in the Town of Latchford. You may own or rent your home, live in shared accommodation or live in the municipality without a fixed address.

Non-Resident Electors

You may qualify as a non-resident elector if you personally own or rent property in Latchford but live in another municipality.

Ownership or tenancy must be held personally. Property owned by a corporation, business or trust does not normally provide individual voting eligibility.

The spouse of a qualifying non-resident property owner or tenant may also be eligible to vote in Latchford.

Students

Students may be eligible to vote in both the municipality where they temporarily live while attending school and the municipality they consider to be their permanent home.

Your name must be on the Voters’ List before you can vote in the 2026 Municipal Election.

To confirm that you are on the Town of Latchford’s Voters’ List:

• Visit the Municipal Office during regular office hours; or
• Email clerk@latchford.ca.

Please include your full name and qualifying address when contacting the Clerk.

If your name is not on the list or your information is incorrect, you may complete an Application to Amend the Voters’ List. Applications are available at the Municipal Office.

Checking your information before Voting Day will help save time and prevent delays at the voting place.

Who Is Eligible to Vote?

You are eligible to vote in the Town of Latchford if, on Voting Day, you:

• Are a Canadian citizen;
• Are at least 18 years old;
• Live in Latchford, own or rent property in Latchford, or are the spouse of an owner or tenant; and
• Are not prohibited from voting under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996.

When voting in person, you must provide identification showing your name and qualifying address. Photo identification is not required.

Acceptable identification may include:

• Ontario driver’s licence;
• Ontario Photo Card;
• Ontario health card, if it displays your name and address;
• Property tax assessment;
• Mortgage statement, lease or rental agreement;
• Insurance policy or statement;
• Bank or credit card statement;
• Utility bill;
• Government-issued document; or
• Pay statement or T4.

A Canadian passport is not acceptable voter identification because the address is entered by the passport holder.

If your name is already on the Voters’ List but you do not have acceptable identification, you may be permitted to complete a Declaration of Identity at the voting place.

If you are unable to vote in person, you may appoint another eligible elector to vote on your behalf. This person is called your voting proxy.

Appointing a Voting Proxy

The person appointing a proxy must:

• Be eligible to vote in the Town of Latchford.
• Appoint someone who is also eligible to vote in the Town of Latchford.
• Know the person being appointed and have the information required to complete the Appointment for Voting Proxy Form.
• Complete and sign two original copies of the prescribed Appointment for Voting Proxy Form (Form 3). A photocopy of a signed form is not acceptable.
• Give both original copies to the person being appointed.

A person may appoint only one voting proxy.

Acting as a Voting Proxy

The person being appointed must:

• Be eligible to vote in the Town of Latchford.
• Bring both completed original forms to the Municipal Office in person to have the appointment certified by the Clerk.
• Present the certified proxy form when voting on behalf of the person who appointed them.

A person may act as a proxy for only one other person. However, a person may act as a proxy for more than one family member if they are the spouse, sibling, parent, child, grandparent or grandchild of each person who appointed them.

A person cannot act as a proxy for both a family member and a non-family member.

A person acting as a proxy may still cast their own ballot.

Before Completing a Proxy Form

Residents are strongly encouraged to visit the Municipal Office or email clerk@latchford.ca to obtain the most up-to-date Appointment for Voting Proxy Form and confirm that they have all the required information, documentation and that you are on the Voter's List.

Submitting a form does not automatically qualify a person to vote by proxy. The Clerk must be satisfied that both the person appointing the proxy and the person being appointed are eligible before certifying the appointment.

Important Public-Record Notice

All information contained on a Voting Proxy Form is part of the public record and may be inspected by any person.

A power of attorney, executor appointment or other representative authority does not permit someone to vote on another person’s behalf. A person may vote for someone else only if they have been properly appointed and certified as a voting proxy.

Do I need photo identification?

No. Your identification must show your name and qualifying address, but it does not need to include a photograph.

What if I am not on the Voters’ List?

You may apply to have your name added by completing an Application to Amend the Voters’ List and providing proof of your eligibility.

Can I vote if I own property in Latchford but live somewhere else?

You may qualify as a non-resident elector if you personally own or rent property in Latchford. Your spouse may also qualify. Contact the Clerk to confirm your eligibility.

Can I vote in more than one municipality?

Yes, if you independently qualify to vote in each municipality. For example, you may qualify as a resident elector where you live and as a non-resident elector where you personally own or rent another property.

Can someone with power of attorney vote for me?

No. A power of attorney does not authorize someone to vote on another person’s behalf. The person must be properly appointed and certified as a voting proxy.

What if I make a mistake on my ballot?

Return the ballot to an election official before placing it in the ballot box. The ballot will be cancelled, and you may receive a replacement.

Can someone help me vote?

Yes. Speak with an election official if you require assistance or an accommodation.

Can I take a photograph of my completed ballot?

Electors should not photograph or share their completed ballots because doing so may compromise ballot secrecy.
